Simultaneously
languid and agitated—murky electronic background and stuttering beats such as
those on “Pendulum” and “Video Girl” lead to an impression of jittery anxiety
superimposed on a slow-moving world. This auditory dissonance is part of the
appeal of LP1, what proves my initial reaction (“Grimes on heroin”) wrong.
Instead of ambient chillwave, LP1 is an emotionally-charged confessional,
alternately languid and skittish. It’s music for the nighttime, for the lonely
hours.
